Uses
Amoxicillin is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
- Ear, nose, and throat infections including otitis media and sinusitis
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Gastrointestinal infections caused by Helicobacter pylori (as part of combination therapy)
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin works by preventing bacteria from forming a proper cell wall, which leads to the destruction of the bacterial cells.
Dosage
- Adults and older children: Typically prescribed in doses such as 250 mg to 500 mg, taken three times daily
- Infants and younger children: Dosage is based on body weight and is often given in liquid (suspension) form to allow accurate dosing
